What an ordinary day looks like in 2028–2030

Nothing below requires a breakthrough. It’s just today’s trajectories, run forward a few years.

MOBILITY

The car that shows up already knows the route.

Waymo alone is running well over 250,000 paid robotaxi rides a week across a handful of U.S. cities, and Tesla is pushing its own version into more markets. The rides are already normal for the people who use them — no small talk, no tip, just a car that arrives, drives well, and drops you off.

The number that matters is cost: robotaxi rides are trending toward $0.25–$0.35 per mile as fleets scale. At that price, owning a car in a city stops being the default, and taking five short trips a day instead of one long one stops being expensive.

DELIVERY

Small things start arriving by air.

Walmart’s drone delivery program with Wing already covers a large share of U.S. metro areas, and Zipline has completed well over a million autonomous deliveries — medical supplies first, now everyday goods. None of this needed a breakthrough; it needed regulators to catch up and costs to drop.

The practical effect: a forgotten ingredient or a small pharmacy order stops being a 20-minute round trip in a car. It becomes a 10-minute wait on your porch or, increasingly, your garage.

FOOD

The kitchen behind your food gets smaller and cheaper.

Cloud kitchens paired with kitchen robotics — the model companies like Atoms and CloudKitchens are building — cut labor and rent costs enough to make freshly prepared food meaningfully cheaper than cooking from scratch for one or two people. A fry station or assembly line that used to need three people can run with one supervising several machines.

That doesn’t kill restaurants. It kills the economic case for the big weekly grocery haul and the home-cooked-out-of-obligation dinner, for a lot of households.

AGENTS

You stop opening apps to get things done.

A personal AI agent that can order your groceries, book your ride, handle a return, or sit on hold with customer service for you is already close to real, not speculative. The interface stops being ten different apps and becomes one conversation: "handle this."

This is less dramatic than it sounds day-to-day — it mostly just removes friction. The five minutes you used to spend comparing delivery options disappear.

PARADOX

Cheaper doesn’t mean less. It means more.

This is the part people usually get backwards. When something gets radically cheaper, people don’t do less of it — they do a lot more of it. Cheap robotaxi miles don’t reduce total miles driven; total miles driven goes up, because trips that weren’t worth taking before suddenly are.

Economists call this the Jevons paradox, and it shows up everywhere automation lands: more trips, more small deliveries, more prepared meals, not fewer. The volume of activity increases even as the cost per unit collapses.

HOME

Your garage becomes a landing pad.

As drone delivery and robotaxis scale together, the garage stops being just a place for a car you rarely use and starts doubling as a drop point — for packages, for groceries, for food. The big once-a-week supermarket run gets replaced by things simply arriving as you need them.

None of this requires a single dramatic breakthrough. It’s the compounding effect of costs falling on things that were already technically possible.
